– Stories of Creativity

Each year Murdoch University hosts the annual Creative Showcase that is planned, developed and designed by our Creative Media students. The exhibition’s purpose is to creatively demonstrate student work from Strategic Communication, Digital Communication, Communication & Media Studies, Journalism & Content Production, Theatre & Creative Production, English & Creative Writing, Art History, Sound Design, Entertainment Technology, Graphic Design, Design Thinking, Games Art & Design, Photography and Screen Production. Each year’s theme is different and unique and this year the theme is Emerge.

At Murdoch, our Strategic Communication students learn how to strategically communicate and engage with various stakeholders and audiences. They develop digital and traditional communication skills while learning how to apply those skills in a range of contexts, from web communication to social media to creative production and news media.

Our Graphic Design programme immerses students in a fast-paced world of visual innovation. Through human-centred design, students are taught about the value of design from the very beginning. Students in the Entertainment Technology Minor develop knowledge and skills in the production and performance of theatrical and other entertainment events. Through the exploration of the different disciplines within Entertainment Technology, students develop the understanding and capacity to work within the sector locally, nationally and internationally.

At Murdoch, the Photography major provides students with a comprehensive set of practical photographic and digital imaging skills in combination with theoretical knowledge to enable them as photographers to develop their vision and progress their career as creative professionals. Students will have their creative practice informed and enriched by an in-depth study of the power and meaning of images within a cultural-historical context.

Theatre and Drama at Murdoch introduces students to a range of dynamic performative and dramatic texts. Students develop the critical language to explore how dramatic texts and performances make their mark in a ramge of different historical, social and cultural contexts. With numerous opportunities to engage – both on and off stage – in a diverse range of performance modes and styles, students also develop the professionalism and the confidence to create, perform, and produce work for public performance.

Creative Writing

English and Creative Writing at Murdoch invites students to immerse themselves in the critical, creative and imaginative worlds of literature and writing. Using the language of literary analysis, students develop their skills in critical thinking and communication. Alongside the opportunity to read diverse texts written in different historical periods and cultures, students will hone their creative and academic writing skills.

Art History

Art history is vital for understanding how creative expression reflects and shapes social, political, and cultural change across time. The examples of student work showcased here come from the unit HIS216: The Art of Protest: The Music, Performance and Visual Arts of Activism since 1850, which explores how artists have used diverse forms of expression to challenge power, inspire movements, and imagine more just futures.

Games Art
& Design

Games Art and Design students develop the skills and concepts to be able to produce art that communicates – whether it is at the early stages of preproduction or implementing in-engine assets for interaction. Combining disciplines such as concept art and illustration , 3D sculpting and modelling, animation, game engine scripting, and game production, students come together to collaborate on playable, marketable games. The focus is on gaining an understanding of all aspects of the game production pipeline and finding particular areas to dive deep and excel, and to build a portfolio that will impress at the industry level.

How do I get there?

The venue for Emerge Creative Showcase this year, is in Murdoch University’s own Geoffrey Bolton library. You can also use navigation apps to find the quickest route to the event by searching ‘Geoffrey Bolton Library’. There will also be lots of signs to help guide you to the library around campus!

Is the whole event actually free?

Yes of course! Tickets to Emerge 2025 is absolutely free for all attendees! We believe in fostering a creative community accessible to everyone. Just grab your free ticket here and show us at the door!

Will there be food and drinks?

Absolutely! There will be a bar filled with plenty of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and loads of foods and snacks.

Do I have to be a Murdoch Student to attend?

Absolutely Not!!! Emerge 2025 is open to everyone. Whether you’re a design enthusiast, a student, a professional, or just friends/family, all are welcome to join us in celebrating creativity and innovation!
